The rotary encoder is a transducer that converts the angular position or motion of a shaft into electrical signals that can be interpreted by a control system. It is the component that allows the PLC or the drive to always know precisely where an axis is located and at what speed it is moving—information that is indispensable for any modern motion control system.
Encoders are divided into two main families: incremental encoders,which provide information on relative movement via pulses, and absolute encoders,which provide the exact position at any given moment—even after a power-off—without the need for a homing sequence.
Rotary transducers—a technical term often used in plant specifications to refer to both encoders and tachogenerators—are available in incremental and absolute versions, optical and magnetic technologies, and for both solid and hollow shafts.
